Chairs...the root of all evil

The reality about the chair, any chair, is that, while it may be comfortable, it is physiologically harmful. It is thought that the number of back problems directly correlates with the increased number of hours spent seated, according to Galen Cranz in The Chair: Rethinking Culture, Body and Design. If we are seated in a regular chair, feet on the floor, the ninety degree angle of the hip exerts pressure on the diaphragm and restricts the internal organs. Blood flow slows, oxygen to the brain is reduced and we tire more quickly. Chair sitting is an athletic endeavor with no cardio-vascular benefit. The body has to work constantly to stay upright and it soon works harder and harder in the name of relaxation.
